Marble Faces:Explore the Museums of Athens

Outdoor archaeological sites aren't the only places culture vultures could explore Greek heritage, and not just ancient. Athens will delight the traveller with its exceptional museums; small diamonds that conceal treasures in perfect condition.

The first must-see, the Benaki museum is a formidable conservatory of Greek art from Antiquity to the 20th century. In the neoclassical building of the museum, are exhibited collections that show the evolution of the Greek world from antiquity to the 20th century, offering a magnificent insight into Greek culture from antiquity to modern times. Do not forget to visit the magnificent café on the terrace of the museum.

We must not forget the fascinating Cycladic Art Museum, an essential complement to the Benaki Museum, which houses the largest collection of objects from the ancient cultures of the Aegean Sea and Cyprus, with particular weight given to the art of the Cyclades. ; a museum at the forefront of educational muse projects.

Opposite the last museum is the the Byzantine and Christian Museum and its collections of icons and sculptures. One of the largest of its kind in the world. The collections are superbly presented in vast galleries. More than 3,000 pieces are on display to the public: icons, sculptures, ceramics, church fabrics, paintings, miniatures, frescoes and mosaics. Take your coffee or meal at the museum bistro which has a view of the gardens of Aristotle's Lyceum.

The National History Museum is located in the Old Parliament, near Syntagma Square. Its exhibits include paintings and prints, flags and weapons of national liberation struggles. Its collections present the modern and contemporary history of Greece from the 18th century to the present day.

New National Pinacoteca : Dedicated to neo-Hellenic painting from the origins of the Greek State, opened its doors in 2021 for the celebrations of the bicentenary of Greek independence.

Last but not least, during your archaeological walk, complete your visit with a museum not to be missed. The Acropolis Museum, housed in an ultra-modern building designed by architect Bernard Tschumi and the National Archaeological Museum, the Greek Louvre.
