Athena and the Olympic Games

First we visit the sacred hill of the Acropolis, its monuments and, of course, the marvelous temple of the Parthenon. Dedicated to the cult of Athena, the protective goddess of the city. The Acropolis (meaning "upper city" in Greek) dominates the city by more than one hundred and fifty meters. We continue our visit passing by the Arch of Hadrian, an imposing monument which has more than 21 centuries of life. Then we admire the majestic Zappeion congress center, a neoclassical building from the 19th century and we end up in the Stadium.

The Panathenaic Stadium, built 25 centuries ago and leaning on an amphitheater of wooded hills, is also called by the Athenians “Kallimarmaro” which means “of beautiful marble” in Greek. Abandoned and destroyed in the Middle Ages, the white marble stadium was restored on the occasion of the first Olympic Games of the modern era in 1896. It was again renovated at the beginning of the 21st century to accommodate the arrival of the event of the marathon during the Olympic Games in 2004. The emblematic stadium is today the finish line of the Athens marathon. In addition, it has a capacity of eighty thousand spectators on sixty levels, and it is the only stadium in the world entirely built in marble.
